Luzerne County Convention Center Authority honored Local and State Officials for their efforts in receiving funds from Pennsylvania's "Conservation Works!" grant program throughthe American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the new outdoor LED marquee at Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre.
"The Luzerne County Convention Center Authority thanks the Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance, Department of Environmental Protection and Congressman Kanjorski for their support in enabling us to not only have a state of the art marquee with an LED display and lighting, but one that will allow us to go green by reducing energy consumption and air pollution," said LCCCA Future Directions Chair
Donna Cupinski.
The funds were awarded to Luzerne County Convention Center Authority by Governor Rendell on November 17, 2009. The marquee cost is estimated at $196,196 with $176,576 being awarded through the competitive process of the "Conservation Works!" grant and $19,620 being matched by the LCCCA. The grant was one of 100 grants awarded out of approximately 500 submitted.
The LED marquee bid was awarded by the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority to Daktronics, Inc., located in South Dakota, at their monthly Board Meeting on April 14, 2010. The marquee was installed locally by Bartush signs in Orwigsburg, PA. Installation of the marquee was completed on Friday, June 18.
The marquee is now comprised of LED back-lighting and two 8'8" x 21'2" Galaxy Pro LED Video Messaging displays. The displays feature 128 line by 320 column resolution; 20mm line spacing and
are capable of producing 4.4 trillion colors of text, graphics and video clips through their 1 red, 1 green, and 1 blue pixel configuration. The displays have a minimum 100,000 hour lifespan and can
be dimmed for better night-time viewing. The display will save over 2 million kilowatt hours of energy over its lifespan (198,000 kilowatt hours per year) and will reduce air pollution by reducing
emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, mercury and the new sign will eliminate residual waste.
The marquee is now expected to save roughly $22,000 a year through a reduction in energy usage. The marquee now costs $22.87 per day to illuminate versus the previous $82.81 per day. An additional
$6,400 is expected to be saved by not having to replace display bulbs every two out of three years.
